Descripción de un porrón

 En Etiquetas de Evelyn Waugh me sorprendió encontrar el relato de cómo un autóctono de Barcelona bebe de un porrón:

En uno de los restaurantes, un local muy humilde, poco más que una fonda de cocheros, vi a un soldado muy joven que bebía de un frasco provisto de un pitorro, con el extremo puntiagudo, que le sobresalía del lado. El muchacho lo sostenía con el brazo extendido, inclinándolo de manera que un chorro muy delicado de vino brotaba con cierta fuerza del pitorro, y lo recogía en la boca, sacando afuera con un gesto informal el labio inferior. El vino le salpicaba los dientes y se deslizaba por su gaznate sin que se derramara una sola gota. Entonces, con un diestro giro de la muñeca, interrumpía el flujo, recogía las últimas gotas y pasaba el frasco por encima de la mesa a su compañero, el cual bebía de la misma manera, pero con cierta torpeza, dirigiendo el chorro primero a un ojo y luego mentón abajo, lo cual causaba la hilaridad de todos los parroquianos. Parece muy difícil beber de ese modo, y creo que es más difícil de lo que parece, pero debe de ser muy delicioso cuando uno ha aprendido (187-188).

At one of the restaurants, a very humble place, little more than a cabman’s eating-house, I saw a young private soldier drink from a flask that had a spout, finely pointed at the end, protruding from its side. He held it at arm’s length, tilting it so that a very delicate stream of wine shot from it with some force. This he caught in his mouth by negligently protruding his lower lip. The wine splashed against his teeth and gurgled down his throat without a drop being spilled. Then, with a deft twist of the wrist, he stopped the flow, catching the last drips, and passed the flask across the table to his companion, who drank in the same manner, but more clumsily, directing the stream first into his eye and then down his chin, to the delight of everyone in the restaurant. It looks very difficult to drink like that, and is, I believe, more difficult than it looks, but it must be very delicious when one has learned (173)
