No otra cosa que existir

Sobre el Espíritu Santo y el Papa me impresionó esto que dijo en 1997 el entonces Cardenal Ratzinger: cuando le preguntaron si creía que «el Espíritu Santo tiene un papel en la elección del Papa»:

Yo no diría eso en el sentido de que el Espíritu Santo seleccione al Papa, porque hay muchos ejemplos contrarios de Papas a los que el Espíritu Santo obviamente no habría seleccionado. Yo diría que el Espíritu no toma exactamente control de la cuestión, sino que mejor, como un buen educador, por así decirlo, nos deja mucho espacio, mucha libertad, sin abandonarnos del todo. Así la función del Espíritu habría que entenderla en un sentido mucho más elástico, no dictando al candidato por el cual uno debe votar. Probablemente la única seguridad que ofrece es que la cosa no puede acabar totalmente arruinada.
I would not say so in the sense that the Holy Spirit picks out the pope, because there are too many contrary instances of popes the Holy Spirit would obviously not have picked. I would say that the Spirit does not exactly take control of the affair, but rather like a good educator, as it were, leaves us much space, much freedom, without entirely abandoning us. Y justo en esos días que leía lo anterior vi esto en una carta de Flannery O'Connor a Erik Langkjaer:

Tus reflexiones sobre la Iglesia son dolorosas, como siempre. El mérito de la Iglesia no se halla en lo que hace sino en lo que es. Un día va a llegar cuando la Iglesia esté tan acosada y aprisionada que no hará otra cosa que existir; y eso será suficiente.
Your reflections on the Church are painful, as usual. The merit of the Church doesn't lie in what she does but what she is. The day is going to come when the Church is so hemmed in and nailed down that she won't be doing anything but being, which will be enough.
